It all started with Kelso.

Of course you read about Banjo and Millie each time you visit, but there’s a special dog that you haven’t heard about who really started my life-long love affair with dogs, and today marks my third year without her. Her name was Kelso. My sister and I had just lost our bunny rabbit, and my parents thought a puppy would be good for us. They found an ad in the newspaper for some puppies and brought Kelso home to us just in time for Thanksgiving of 1990. Kelso was a fixture in my life from the time I was just a little girl, and lived to be 17 years old. I was 26 when she passed away. She literally watched me grow up. That’s the unique bond I shared with this dog that cannot be replaced, one that will stay with me my entire life. I want to share with you all some memories my family shared with me to remember her publicly today. I hope you enjoy these stories of our special little dog, all 14 pounds of our feisty and loving shih tzu, Kelso.

From my Dad:

We were awakened from a deep sleep around 1:00a.m. on Sunday by her constant, purposeful barking. At the time she was less than a year old, and it was a bark we had never heard before. Kelso had already developed another purposeful bark, intended to convey her displeasure with the quality and speed of the food service, a skill she was able to hone over the next 17 years of her reign. And obviously she was in the kitchen, but where else would you expect her in the wee hours of the morning. The refrigerator door just might accidentally open and a bonanza fall out.  But this bark, though equally purposeful, was clearly distinguishable from a demand or complaint, it was a call to arms. Someone had entered the kitchen through the kitchen window, and she was damn sure no one had ever entered through the kitchen window to feed her.  Of course, the intruder could have entered unheralded, had he but entered the kitchen door carrying a pork chop. But I digress. I loaded my 357 and heeded the call. As I narrowed the gap, the barking suddenly stopped and Kelso and I crossed paths in the foyer. She stopped, cocked her head to one side, which for those of you who are unfamiliar with the shih tzu breed, is somewhat akin to the royal wave, and conveyed the following message: there is a man hiding in the kitchen; he came through the window; he did not have a pork chop; what you do with him from this point on is your own business; I am going to bed; please wake me for breakfast.

From my sister:
Kelso was my best friend from the moment she came home to live with us- that day I was 10 years old, and tiny little Kelso climbed up my baggy pants leg and I was smitten.  I remember dressing her up in our cabbage patch kid fur coats (why does a dog need a second fur coat?) and she just went along with it.  I remember sitting on the floor in front of the TV with her as a child with a bag of chocolate chips- I didn't know of course dogs shouldn't eat chocolate- and she didn't either- we would sit there two peas in a pod- I'd eat one, she'd eat one... Lord only knows why she didn't ever get sick. I also remember as a child sharing my ice cream on a cone with her. We were best friends!
And as we grew up, even when she was pretty old, if I would cry or hurt myself, she would run to my side, lick me and cry too. I even remember fighting with Layne in high school, and Kelso would sit there and bark at us as if to say- "Stop fighting! Let's play!"
Kelso is the dog that spoiled all other dogs for me. She is the reason I love shih tzus so much today, and I miss her so much every day it hurts.
From my Mom:
In the last year or two of her life, when we sat down to eat, we had to lock her out of the kitchen because of her barking for food. And I remember, one time, accidentally sucking her tail up in the vacuum cleaner.  She avoided me for days, and the vacuum for the rest of her life. Kelso was our first shih tzu, but not our last:  She had 4 puppies (we kept two - Spike and Samantha), Samantha had 5 more.  Then Delaney had 5. Add it up: 15 shih tzus.  Do you think we like the breed?  All because of Kelso.  Check out the names, too: Kelso for Kelley, Samantha for Sam, Delaney for Layne and Penny for Penny. One whacked-out family.
Kelso on the day she came home to us. I was 8!
Sweet Kelso
Kelso with her daughter Sammy at the top, and with me when she was 17!

Atomic Attic's Handmade Suitcase Beds

If you've got a cat or a small dog and you're in the market for getting them a new bed, then check out Atomic Attic's vintage upcycled suitcase beds. I'm in love with the retro vibe, and they're well-priced for such cute, stylish, handmade beds. They aren't very large, so they would be best suited for a small, lightweight cat or dog. It wouldn't really fit Banjo, but it would be perfect for Millie!

Thank You to Oscar the Pooch for Our Stylish Blogger Award!

Banjo and Millie are so stoked to have received the Stylish Blogger Award from Oscar the Pooch! We’ve only just discovered Oscar recently, and are so thrilled that they’ve enjoyed checking out our ramblings, so thank you, Oscar!

We’ve had a great time blogging for the short time we have, and it’s reasons like these that make it so much fun – the opportunity to meet other bloggers that share the same interests and crazy pet lover quirks that only true lovers can fully appreciate! As Oscar the Pooch said, pet bloggers really are some of the nicest people out there. Thanks for being so welcoming to Banjo and Millie!

So the rules for accepting the award are to thank the person who gave you the award, share 7 things about yourself, link to 15 recently discovered bloggers, then contact them to tell them about the award. So here goes!

Seven things about me. Well, seven things about us, since Banjo and Millie are the real stars here.

1.   I’ve been a dog-lover for 10,543 days. Ok, busted, it might be hard to be a dog-lover from the moment of birth, but it’s been close. In my lifetime, I’ve had the privilege of having the love of 8 full-time dogs. That doesn’t include the 3 litters of shih tzu puppies who went to friends and family members who don’t live with me (but I still consider them my babies too, of course). They’ve made everything in my life so much more meaningful. I have them to thank for giving me perspective. Good dog!

2.   Banjo has no teeth. Well, he has a few, but basically he doesn’t. When we adopted him, most of the few teeth he had remaining were ground nearly down to the root, so we had to have all but a couple removed. He’s the sweetest, tamest, most ridiculously calm dog in the first place, but with no teeth, he has to be the world’s least threatening dog.

3.   Millie was almost not born. She was the last of her litter, and her mama Delaney (my parents’ dog) was having trouble birthing her. When we took Delaney to the emergency vet, they told us the pup was upside down in the birth canal with no heartbeat, so they took her in the back to have a stillbirth. When they came back, they had one tiny, adorably happy, very much alive, Millie. She is our very own little miracle. In fact, before she came to us, she was even named Lazarus, because she rose from the dead!

4.   Though he is a beagle, which is allegedly a breed of very vocal hounds, Banjo doesn’t bark. Instead, when he wants or needs something, he does a little tap dance to let it be known.

5.   Millie is a kisser. She loves to give kisses and has the sweetest little butt wiggle when she’s happy to see you. It’s not really a tail wag, but rather the cutest little shake of her entire tush, like she can’t control it she is so overcome with joy. She never fails to make you feel like you are the most important person in the world.

6.   Banjo hates grass. You have to force him to walk on it. It's very peculiar. He loves it though, if there's SNOW on the grass.

7.  Millie is afraid of her leash. Once it's on her, she's totally fine, but whenever I pull out her leash, she darts under the couch. I still haven't figured this one out.

Now I get to pass on the award to all of the other blogs who I’m excited to share! This is where the fun really begins. I hope you enjoy checking out these 15 blogs that I would like to pass on the Stylish Blogger Award to! I know several of these individuals have actually already received the award, so my apologies for doubling up, but I think you deserve it! Woof!

Millie Tries the Stairs

Last weekend while visiting the “grandparents,” Millie decided to attempt the stairs. You see, Millie has done the stairs at our house before once or twice. But she has also slid all the way back down them three or four times. Hardwood stairs are slippery and scary, so it’s no wonder she is nervous on stairs.

So when she had a shot at carpeted stairs, Millie was brave. She darted right up the stairs, but when she got halfway, she stopped and completely froze. She will get it eventually!

Henrico Humane Pet Expo

Over the weekend, Banjo & Millie (and Mom & Dad, of course) went to our first Henrico Humane Society Pet Expo, and boy, did we all have fun! The Expo consisted of over 75 local vendors (grooming, daycare, artists, retail, rescue groups and more), and even more exciting, there were HUNDREDS of other dogs who came out and supported the Humane Society. Dogs of all shapes and sizes paraded around the Showplace, and Banjo & Millie had a good time making all kinds of new friends. We also found a few new local vendors that we're excited to get to know, so we will be showcasing/reviewing them here in the near future!

Here are just a few photos we took while wandering the Expo.

In Honor of Presidents' Day

To celebrate Presidents' Day, Banjo & Millie thought it might be fun to spotlight none other than the First Dog himself, Bo Obama!

Bo was born on October 9, 2008 and was the topic of much discussion after President Obama’s election. What breed would become the face of the American Dog? There was much speculation and after 6 whole months, it was announced that the First Family would receive Bo, the Portuguese Water Dog, as a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy (who owned one of Bo’s litter mates). Several weeks before the announcement, there was special meeting to determine whether or not Bo clicked with the Obama’s (a meeting that came to be referred to by the staff as “The Meeting”). Of course, the rest is history, as Bo was the perfect fit, and was introduced to the world as Bo Obama, First Dog of the United States. When asked if Bo would be allowed inside the Oval Office, President Obama responded, “of course” and went on to quote President Harry Truman who famously said, “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.” (Wikipedia).

Other famous First Dogs include Scottish Terrier Barney (Bush, Jr.), Chocolate Lab Buddy (Clinton), English Springer Spaniel (Millie – yes Millie! – Bush, Sr.), and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Rex (Reagan).

Happy Presidents' Day! Woof!

The Weather Gets Warm...

The weather is starting to warm, and Banjo & Millie have been taking advantage! Here's our first trip down to the river now that we can actually enjoy sitting outside. We hope you have a fabulous (and if lucky, warm) Saturday!

Banjo and Millie Want a Silly Buddy

If you enjoy unique handmade items for your pup, then you will love these little collars by Etsy seller Silly Buddy! We seem to be going through collars quickly in this household (particularly, Millie's collars since she loves to play in mud) - not to mention that I might be mildly obsessed with buying irresistibly cute stuff for Banjo and Millie who couldn't care any less about how I clothe them. Or whether or not they are clothed at all. Silly Buddy is a shop owned by the self-proclaimed dog-obsessed Hande and Emre. If you visit their shop, be sure to read their profile all about Buddy who the shop is named for. Banjo and Millie are proud to support a shop of dog nuts like Hande and Emre's!

Millie's Doppelgänger?

This morning while dropping Mildred off at daycare, a lovely, older English lady started fawning all over little Millie. Of course, I think Millie is beautiful, but this lovely lady went so far as to say she wants Millie to meet her dog, Morton, and though Morton is no Prince William, Millie could surely pass as Kate Middleton! We've never been so flattered, though I'm not sure I see the resemblance. What do you think? Does your dog have a celebrity look-a-like?

Pup Pie Anyone?

I'm totally digging these Pup Pies at Uncommon Goods. Banjo & Millie always appreciate a cleverly branded dog product like these! So we did a little research to see where these adorable Pup Pies come from, and we discovered they are from the Lazy Dog Cookie Co. The pies come in apple, pumpkin, birthday cake, banana nut brownie, peanutbutter, and deep dish pizza. What a great treat for the sweet little (canine) love in your life.

A Canine Valentine

Over the weekend, Millie made a Valentine for some of the special people in her life (Ok, maybe it was me who actually made it. But it was Millie's idea.) Here's what she gave to the people at Little Dog Services who take such great care of her week after week!

Last Minute Valentine's Gifts for Your Little Furry Love

If you're like me, perhaps you've procrastinated a little too long, and now here it is Valentine's Day, and you forgot to pick up that something special for the furry love of your life! Well, never fear, you still have time and options! Here are just a few easy pooch-pampering gift ideas that you can pull together quickly. Yes, even today at the last minute!

Cook a special Valentine's meal. For you AND the pup!
My parents gave me a great cookbook called The Dog Ate It: Cooking for Yourself and Your Four-Legged Friends that offers up some great recipes that are healthy for both you and your pooch. Here's a great one to try!

Turkey Meatballs over Pasta

Take me out to the dog park!
If it's not too cold where you are, then take a little extra special trip to the local dog park. Make sure you bring your dog's favorite toy (Millie likes her ball), and take plenty of time where it's just the two of you. Turn off the cell phone. Leave behind the distractions. Your pup deserves that quality one-on-one time with just you! That is, after all, the best gift you can give them!

Canine Masseuse for a Day
A tummy rub is always much appreciated. This Valentine's Day, give Fido a good, long belly rub and incorporate some of these calming canine massage techniques. After a long day at play, this is a great way to help them unwind, and it's allegedly supposed to be a very good bonding tool between man and canine.

Don't Forget the Pups on Valentine's Day

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, I realized I still don't have gifts for Banjo or Millie! And really, who is more deserving than my two little pups who always, without question, love me unconditionally? After just a quick little search, I found a gazillion perfect little gifts for my two special Valentines! Here are just a few super adorable gifts for your pampered pooch this Valentine’s Day!

How about a fun new collar? We adore these lovey-dovey festive collars!
(From top to bottom: Murphy & Gert, R.E. Stowe, and BeadzNBling)

I’m sure your pooch will want to look his or her best when you take them out for a nice long Valentine’s Day stroll. Make sure they feel fancy in these great fashions.

If your pup is anything like my Millie, then a fun new toy is the perfect Valentine's gift. Especially a fancy bottle of squeaky champagne! (From top to bottom: FetchDog, Pet SimpleWags & Wiggles)

If your munchkin isn't quite as into squeaky toys and tennis balls as Millie, then there isn't a dog in the world who doesn't like to hear "Ri Ruff Rou" (sound it out) by getting tasty treats! (From top to bottom: Roll Over Red Rover, Muddy Puppys)

Banjo & Millie ♥ the New iPhone!

After years of waiting for Verizon to get the iPhone, finally, that time has arrived (as I'm sure you all know)! But perhaps what is most exciting about having the iPhone is that I can now post on the go! Not to mention, capture photos and videos on the fly! My latest app download is the Hipstamatic camera (and no, I'm definitely not a hipster), but I sure love this app! It looks like Banjo and Millie are straight out of the 1970s or 80s! Good times.

Doggie Shoes, the Ultimate Pacifier!

Since this winter has been somewhat harsher than most, I thought it might be a good idea to get Millie a coat and some little shoes to protect her feet (from the cold snow and the chemical ice melt). Not knowing if she would actually be comfortable with them, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on some shoes that she wouldn't wear. So when I found a pair of shoes (I guess it's not actually a pair of shoes for a four-legged patron, is it? Two pairs?) for $4.99, I thought I would finally give them a shot. They are basically little fleecy socks that have soles on them.

Well, as it turns out, Millie is in fact NOT comfortable wearing shoes, I'm guessing for a number of reasons. Apparently, she has giant feet (it's all relative) because the size chart said a shih tzu needs a size small. We could only get two of the shoes on her feet (and that was after quite a struggle). But apart from the shoes being too small, they seemed to act as a pacifier / calming agent because Millie immediately sat down and appeared defeated. It gave us quite the laugh though. Check out the video of her in the silly shoes!

Moose the Jack Russell

If you're a pet owner like me, you may have considered once or twice what it would be like if YOUR dog was an actor. Ok, maybe you haven't. But I have. Whenever I watch a movie or TV show with a dog who is so clever he has his own agent, I can't help but wonder about all of the people behind the six-figure canine actor, and what a day in the life might be like.

One of such dogs I have always found seriously cute and of course, award-worthy, is Moose the Jack Russell. You may not know him by name, but if you ever watched Frasier (where he played the role of Eddie Crane), or My Dog Skip (a real tear-jerker with Moose as the older Skip), then you've seen him in action. Charismatic, and always the comedian, Moose was a natural entertainer, whose true love was chasing cats.

Born in 1990 in Florida, Moose was apparently too much for his original owner to handle.  According to a 2002 Pet Press article,
"Moose couldn’t be house trained; he chewed everything; he dug and barked a lot; and he was constantly escaping and climbing trees. Eventually given to the Florida manager of Birds and Animals Unlimited, a company that trains animals for TV and motion pictures, Moose was put on a plane at 2½ years old and sent to Mathilde DeCagny, an LA trainer working for the show-biz animal company."
Moose was a natural and landed the role of Eddie after only 6 months worth of training. That's where America fell in love with the dog who could famously stare down Kelsey Grammer. With the success of the show, producers realized it would likely have a run that may outlast Moose's acting career, so they bred Moose to have a son, Enzo who would follow in his Dad's footsteps. According to Wikipedia, after about eight years on the show, Moose retired in West LA while Enzo took over the role as Eddie. Moose passed away in 2006 at his home where he lived with his son Enzo.

Have you ever though your dog, like Moose or Enzo, has what it takes to be a canine actor? What special tricks does your pup know?

Pet Insurance Q&A with Trupanion's Heather Reynolds

Banjo and Millie are very excited to introduce our readers to Trupanion's Heather Reynolds as our first guest blogger! Banjo and Millie have been considering pet insurance and wanted to know the ins and outs. We hope you find this Q&A by Heather about pet insurance (specifically, Trupanion) as informative as we have!

Heather Reynolds is a pet lover and internet journalist at Trupanion, North America’s fastest growing pet insurance company. Trupanion offers a simple, customizable pet insurance policy with no payout limits and 90% coverage of veterinary bills. Enrolled pets receive lifetime coverage for diagnostic tests, surgeries, and medications if they get sick or are injured, with no incident, annual or lifetime limit.

When I adopted my first dog in 2005 I didn’t know anything about pet insurance. Then she became seriously ill with a life-threatening liver condition and I started seeing thousands of dollars leave my bank account each month. Only then did I discover pet insurance (at which point it was basically too late).

I invested in pet insurance for my next two dogs the same week I adopted them. Those who didn’t know my history with veterinary bills were always a little skeptical of my decision. And now that I work for pet insurance company Trupanion, I get asked even more questions about how it works and why it’s beneficial. Obviously there are a lot of pet owners who need more information, so today I thought I would answer some of these common questions. At Trupanion, we really like to make things as simple as possible, but if there is something you are still confused about, please let me know.

Q: What is covered in a Trupanion pet insurance plan?
A: Trupanion covers veterinary costs that arise from a pet getting sick or injured. Your policy covers 90% of the actual cost your vet charges for diagnostic testing, treatments, surgeries, and medications less the exam fee.

Q: What is not covered?
A: Trupanion does not offer wellness coverage, including vaccinations, flea medications, and nail trims, because it doubles premiums without adding much additional value. Dental care and spay and neuter surgeries are also considered wellness procedures and are not covered.

Q: Do you cover all types of pets?
A: We only cover cats and dogs.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Trupanion pays 90% of covered healthcare expenses for your pet, and you pay the remaining 10%, as well as your monthly premium, examination fees, and routine preventative care. Monthly premiums vary by breed, location, and any deductible you choose.

Q: What is a deductible?
A: A deductible is the amount of your veterinary bill for which you are responsible before Trupanion starts to cover your veterinary medical expenses. Once the deductible amount has been met for a specific condition, we will pay 90% of all future costs associated with that condition. You have the option of choosing any deductible from $0 up to $1,000.

Q: What does a pet insurance policy look like?
A: We include a sample policy on our website. This sample policy includes our agreement and any limitations and exclusions you may have concerns about.

Q: Will my premium increase over the years?
A: Our premiums do not increase due to a pet’s aging or because of any claims you may submit. Once enrolled, your premiums will be locked into the age category at the time of enrollment. However, premiums will increase over time based on inflation of veterinary medical costs.
