Surgery Update - Are You Confident in Your Vet?

We had a little scare last night with Millie's recovery. Last night, we noticed she was panting very heavily, her tummy was very warm, and it appeared as if some of her internal tissue was poking through her stitches. As you can imagine, I was very concerned. We went to the vet as soon as they opened this morning to let her doctor take a good look at her and he assured me that she was fine, and that her stitches look normal.

While I am no doctor, I can't help but still feel a little uneasy because I just am not convinced that it looks normal. And her heavy breathing still concerns me. I try very hard at this point to trust that, of course, her doctor knows what he is doing, but my maternal instincts (yes, I have maternal instincts for my dog) make me still feel uneasy.

At what point do you have to let go and trust that you are just being overly paranoid and irrational, and at what point do you seek a second opinion?

How do you know you've chosen a good vet?

  1. Listen to your instincts. If you still feel uneasy about Millie's health after visiting her vet, what's the harm in getting a second opinion? Yes, it's going to cost money but if you can afford it then isn't the cost worth your piece of mind that what's going on is part of a normal recovery?

What was the doctor's comment about her panting?

  2. i think its hard to ever be confident in any doctor. but my father is a dentist and he said the best piece of advice he ever got was "the parent is always right." why the parent? because the parents knows their child/pet better than anyone. so i agree with chandra, getting a second opinion is not a bad idea if thats what ur instincts tell u.

  3. Panting is a sign of stress. I would, too, be interested in the vet's opinion on that. Although I do have great trust in my vet, I've never encountered a similar situation that would've cause me to question his opinion. I do believe your peace of mind and Millie's well-being are worth the cost of another opinion.
FYI - I used this online Veterinary service once on a Sunday afternoon when JF was having issues with his neuter site. A Tufts-grad Vet provided me with enough guidance until I could get him to the vet the next morning. http://www.justanswer.com/
I would recommend this service for those times when you're just not sure a vet visit is in order (especially after vet hours when an ER vet visit is the only option).
    Hope Millie is okay.

  4. I can't thank you guys enough for your input and advice. I have decided to wait to see how Millie is doing tomorrow morning, and if the panting continues, I am taking her to another vet for a second opinion. I tend to be a worrier (shocking, I know), so I'm trying to just keep a close eye on her and not let my imagination run too wild, but as you have pointed out, I would much prefer the peace of mind that she is OK. There is no doubt that the price of peace of mind is worth it to me, because in the long run, it's not worth the gamble of something actually being wrong. I will keep you all posted!
